GOVERNOR'S INDUSTRY APPRECIATION LUNCHEON HISTORY

Governor Richard Bryan initiated the Governors Industry Appreciation Luncheons in 1984 to publicly welcome new industries and acknowledge existing Nevada businesses that experienced substantial growth. Governor Kenny C. Guinn continues the tradition and hosts two Luncheons each year - one in southern Nevada and one in northern Nevada. The Luncheons are open to the public with attendance exceeding 1,400 per event.

The Governors Industry Appreciation Luncheons support the Nevada Commission on Economic Developments primary goal to diversify the State's economy. Created in 1983, the Commission has aggressively marketed the Silver State in its efforts to attract a variety of manufacturing, technology and entrepreneurial businesses to Nevada.

Companies receiving special recognition at the Luncheons must stand up to rigid background checks for compliance with state laws and regulations, ethical business practices and other attributes that classify them as good corporate citizens of Nevada. Each company to be recognized is invited to attend the luncheon and a special honoree photo reception where a company representative has his/her picture taken with the Governor and is presented with a special 11" X 15" plaque. Additionally, a special program booklet is produced which includes a photo and narrative about each honoree company.

Five special awards are presented at each luncheon. Special Distinguished Business Criteria were developed for the States Distinguished Business of the Year Award that is presented to one southern and one northern Nevada company each year. Other awards presented include the Motion Picture of the Year and Exporter of the Year. These two awards are presented to both a northern and southern Nevada company each year. In 1997, two special presentations were included in the program; the Inventor of the Year Award presented to one Nevada resident and the Roland Tibbetts Award presented to one Nevada company on behalf of the U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy.
