Commission Meetings -- The April meeting of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development was held April 9, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Administration/Old County Court House building. Train Employees Now (TEN) program funds were approved for General Motors Service and Parts Operation of Washoe County and Greatbatch-Sierra, Inc., of Carson City. The next regular meeting of the commission will be May 20, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. in Carson City, Dayton or Virginia City.
News Nuggets -- A few Nevada business stories in brief:
* The Associated Press reports that Interstate Bakeries Corp. plans to open a new production facility next month in Nevada in the town of Henderson, while also closing its Boise bakery and transferring production to bakeries in Salt Lake City and Ogden. Click here to read the entire story.
* The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Meadow Gold Dairy plans to build a new manufacturing and distribution plant near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in North Las Vegas. The $40 million facility will take about 16 months to complete. Click here to read the entire story.

* The Reno Gazette-Journal reports Ted Garcia, vice president of Starbucks, tells the story of the company's decision to locate in Nevada. Garcia said California offered "the world," but Starbucks Coffee Co. chose northern Nevada for its business climate. "We got wowed by California. But you provided us the favorable climate for us to succeed." Starbucks recently held a grand opening for its 360,000-square-foot roasting plant in Minden. Click here to read the entire story.
Rural Economic Development Summit -- Elko was the location for a Rural Nevada Economic Development Summit on March 12 and 13. Sierra Pacific Power Company sponsored the summit and co-sponsors were the Elko County Economic Diversification Authority, Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc., the Red Lion Lion Inn & Casino, Newmont Mining Corp. and Great Basin Community College. Offices Opened in China -- The NCED's Global Trade and Investment Office has announced the opening of two representative offices in China, one in Beijing operated by Mr. Michael Koh and one in Shanghai operated by Mr. Walter Burt.
Made in Nevada -- The 72nd Session of the Nevada Legislature is in full swing and Made in Nevada will be at the center of attention May 5-9, 2003, with an exhibit in the atrium of the Legislative Building in Carson City. The Made in Nevada program provides opportunities for both members and buyers. Investment Guide -- The Nevada Investment Guide for Japanese Companies, a collaborative effort of the NCED, Kaji & Associates and UNLV, helps target Japanese companies in California and Japan. The guide, one-part survey results and one-part marketing tool, was completed after the NCED determined that nearly 30 percent of all foreign companies with operations in Nevada are Japanese owned.
Film Office Success -- The NCED's Nevada Film Office reported a record-breaking fiscal year. Highlights include surpassing all previous calendar and fiscal year production revenues, achieving #1 status in the five-state southwest region of Film Commissions, and seeing Las Vegas ranked as one of the top ten filming locations in North America.
