Commission Meetings -- The December meeting of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development will be held on December 10, 2003 by teleconference between Legislative Counsel Bureau offices in Las Vegas and Carson City. Tax incentives were approved by the Commissioners in November for Orni3, LLC -- Ormat Nevada -- of Churchill County.
Trade Mission to China -- Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt recently led Nevada's first official tourism and trade mission to China. The delegation traveled to Beijing and Shanghai on the China mainland, as well as Hong Kong and Macau. Click here to read the entire story.
Nevada Opens Trade Office in Singapore -- The Associated Press reports that Singapore has been added to a list of Nevada trade offices in the Pacific Rim that includes Japan, China and Taiwan. Workers' Comp Costs May Fall -- In a recent story, Las Vegas Sun Bureau Chief Cy Ryan reports that employers in Nevada may see a decrease in their workers' compensation insurance premiums starting in January. According to the story, the National Council on Compensation Insurance has reported to state Insurance Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman that rates could be dropped an average of 16.4 percent for industrial insurance coverage. * In Business Las Vegas staffer Kevin Rademacher reports that Las Vegas tech firm Systems Research & Development has landed $11 million in venture capital financing from Reed Elsevier Ventures and SAIC Venture Capital Corp. * The Reno Gazette-Journal has reported that a study from the National Association of Manufacturers indicates Nevada stands alone in generating jobs in manufacturing. Employment shrank in all other states from July to December 2002, while Nevada's workforce grew by 1,400 jobs.
